Sturnheim

Sturnheim is a small town in the eastern Endless Plains that has seen better days.

COMMON KNOWLEDGE

The town is located on an old miners' trail that a few decades ago was going to be the main trade route to the dragonborn land of Arkhosia Eastern. That never happened and now a few stubborn farmers, vintners and miners keep the town going. Most travellers heading across the plains go straight from the Elsir Vale to Shentulka of vise versa. Very few detour east to Sturnheim, so the locals are very grateful when travellers, especially merchants, do stop over.

REGIONAL FEATURES

The town itself sits on top of a hill, inside a wooden stockade. There are open plains on the approach, but the town rests on the western side of a bank of low, rugged hills. Vineyards cover the surrounding hills and other small crops grow in the small dales near the town.

Forsaken Road

This is the road that heads eastwards from the town into the Grogough Highlands. It is a sad, winding affair, overgrwon with weeds and only used by desperate miners and those that work in the vineyards east of town.

Mayor Kalidar's House

This stone structure, that would have been magnificent in its day, looks a little run down now and at odds with the surrounding wooden structures - especially the fanciful brick and iron bar wall.
Mayor Kalidar (in his 50s) has been in office for a decade now. His family have been the lords here for several generations and Kalidar bears the weight of Sturnheim's downfall heavily (even though it occurred under his grandfather's rein.

  • Saving Sturnheim Campaign. The characters were brought to Kalidar's (after dropping the mounts and wagon off at the stables). He seemed very pleased to see the group and was very interested in the letter from Lord Kerden Jarmaath of Brindol. The mayor said he needed time to consider the proposal, but was very hospital to the party and arranged for them to stay at the local tavern for as long as they liked (as long as they were also trying to help the town).

Sign of the Three Crowns (Small Town)

One of the few stone structures, the 'two'-story tavern leans on the north side of the town square. It is a comfortable place and the favoured gathering place of the community.

The bard, Helak, often performs at the tavern. He clearly has some elven heritage.

Mama Chipmonk, the town herbalist (and gossip) can often be seen at her favoured spot, on the corner at the eastern end of the bar. Be sure not to be on her stool when she comes in.

  • Saving Sturnheim Campaign. The adventurers stayed here. On their first night they joined in the gambling games and met a few of the locals. During the night they interrupted some thugs assaulting and old man beside the tavern from. One thug escaped and two were killed, and the heroes recovered a large stone sword that appeared to be the main reason for the attack.

Town Gates

Each of the gates are manned by three of the local milita during the day. At night, the eastern gates are barred shut, whilst the western are closed but have two guards posted throughout the night. The town does not want to miss the chance of welcoming travellers at any time.

Valdar is the Captain of the Militia. He seems quite young (around 30) for a captain, but also seems very sturn and strict in his job.

  • Saving Sturnheim Campaign. Valdar was happy the party arrived with goods, but seemed rather taken aback when they said they would be staying, indicating the town does not need help from 'outsiders'. The characters found out that Valdar was behind the attack on Poot. Poot gave them a note to show that Valdar had set them up. The characters took Valdar down, with the help of the town militia, and had him locked in the garrison.

PEOPLE OF STURNHEIM

The people of Sturnheim are mostly humans with most showing traits of both Shentulkan and Nerathan blood. Some also have elven ancestry and the nomadic, horse-riding elves of the Endless Plains are welcome visitors.

As in other isolated towns and trading posts throughout the Endless Plains, a few dwarves call Sturnheim home. Several of these were probably the original miners to settle the region and build the current structures here.

Many older folk once blamed the orcs for Sturnheim's downfall, as they arrived in the area around the same time as the town went to ruin, but this simply is not true. The wandering tribes actually helped keep the gnolls away from the town and the trail leading to it. The orcs have recently become good trading partners. They trade furs and meats for the wine and crafts of Sturnheim.

The most common enemies are the roving gnoll tribes found in isolated pockets throughout the region.

Kobolds are a constant menace along the trade-routes through the Endless Plains, including the trail that leads to Sturnheim. Miners report trouble from small tribes in the hills from time to time too.

GROUPS & ORGANISATIONS

Sylvan Conclave

There are no enclaves active in Sturnheim at this time, but like other nomadic folk, a travelling enclave will visit from time to time. The residents of Sturnheim have a mixed feeling about this group. Some appreciate their help in dealing with trouble, like gnolls, but miners and farmers often get into arguments with them about how the land is being used.
