Marth Forest

MARTH FOREST

Climbing the southern foothills of the Giantshield Mountains, Marth Forest is a rugged, wild woodland rarely trodden by human feet except in its southwestern fringes. It is also known as the Thornwood for good reason.

COMMON KNOWLEDGE

There is very little known about the Marth Forest as there are few alive that have walked beneath its boughs, other than the very southern portion (south of Hog Brook).

There is an air of foreboding mystery surrounding the Marth Forest. Those that venture there have described it as if the trees themselves are watching. Strange creatures with tentacles, large dark eyes and rubbery skin have been described. Many believe the forest has caverns that lead to the Underdark, whilst others believe if has connections to some alien plane.

REGIONAL FEATURES

Broken Spire Keep

(See 2E D&D Night Below book 1 p38 (history) & 41 (detailed description)).
There are rumours of this ruined keep lying deep within the forest. It was supposedly the home of the powerful noble house, the Parlfrays, built by Count Sarden Parlfray during the height of Restilor as the region's eastern garrison. Said to have been abaondoned around 100 years ago (the same time the nezumi left the forest).

Hog Brook

(See 2E D&D Night Below book 1 p37).
This meandering stream flows across the southern forest. It has to tributaries (both referred still as Hog Brook) One flows from the hills east of Marthton to meet the southern tributary that winds north from the rolling hills east of Prosser. After they meet the brook runs to the Elsir River a few miles upstream from Elsircross.

The stream gets its name from the many pig herders that brave the woods and take their swine here to feast on the fine harvest of acorns every fall. Over time, many pigs have escaped and the woods around are known for the wild and dangerous razorbacks.

Herders never cross the to the north bank of the Hog Brook.

Stone Circles

There are many old Shentulka stone circles in the western portion of the forest.

PEOPLE OF REALM

Humans and ratlings left the forest en-mass around a century ago and other than the odd tribe of silly goblins, there are no know sentient races known to live in the forest.

ADVENTURERS

Adventurers do not come from the Marth Forest, but there may be adventurers intrigued by the place and venture there out of curiosity. Ratlings in particular feel a strange pull but at the same time a primal fear and feeling that they should not be there.
